BEGININGS

Only fifteen-years-old, my father handed me a Konica 35mm camera and built a darkroom in our basement. I spent hours exploring my newfound passion. I fell in love. To this day, I still possess that camera and my dedication to photography. My passion stems from the sheer joy experienced when I capture a moment in time, especially when that moment resonates with the subject I capture, or allows them to see themselves in a new light. The gratitude I have when others can share that same emotion from my images is immeasurable.

The arrival to the final destination of my career was winding, but photography was always on my mind, begging me back to it. I graduated college with a degree in Economics, worked as a fundraiser for political and charitable organizations, and even as a financial advisor in Florida. But since my passion for photography was always with me so I pursued it further. I spent much of my free time exploring all the possibilities my camera had to offer. Finally, in 2003, I decided to make a change and pursue my true calling.

My studio's first focus was editorial and advertising, landing big clients such as Toyota, Isuzu, and United Healthcare. This beginning gifted me the fundamental understanding of technique; how to use artificial and natural life, how to craft compositions that tell a story, why (although versed in film) I prefer to shoot digitally. I trained in the use of both digital and film, in medium format, large format, and 35mm.

In order to wet my whistle, and gain more experience, I apprenticed for AP and Reuters photographers. I worked in photojournalism. I learned to see the big picture in a moment and translate that to an image. Since then my style has evolved to match my personality: artistic, free-spirited, dramatic, and intuitive.

Now, with over 15 years in the wedding industry, and over 800 weddings documented, my team and I bring a broad range of experience and skill to the big day. We are well polished at navigating the live action atmosphere of the wedding while keeping our interactions with the guests playful and non-intrusive, so as to best artfully capture them as they naturally, dramatically occur, and without imposition.

PHILOSOPHY

Documenting two people coming together in celebration of their love is an honor and a privilege. It is one I take seriously, one I have a responsibility to. Every wedding is unique, but that uniqueness is characterized by more than just diversity in location, aesthetic, choices in accents like flowers and music. Every wedding is unique because each possesses its own emotional essence. My pictures identify this essence, hone in on it, and reflect the emotional dialogues and nuances of a couples celebratory day.

Like any documentarian, I do my research. I learn about the bride, about the groom, and observe a couples chemistry to understand what makes them work well together. In order to execute this, I take the future bride and groom out to dinner to converse in a causal, but intimate, manner. Once I understand why their love story has wings, I create an editorial collection of images to tell their wedding story. I capture images that are sentimental, timeless, and unique. The emotional interactions between my clients’ family and friends are the beating heart of the wedding day, and of my work.

ENGAGEMENT

Engagement sessions can be intimidating! Don't fret, I guarantee you will arrive comfortable and relaxed on the day of your shoot. My goal is to ease you into the process, and even make it enjoyable. Your best shots will be achieved when you're relaxed, because then your truest selves will shine. Once you book with me, I'll take you both to dinner, or, if that isn't feasible, chat by Skype. We'll get to know another, and begin to challenge those preconceptions of what to expect and let our ideas develop organically. Over small bites, and cocktails, I'll really see what makes you two a couple. I promise we will not only share laughter, but determine exactly what your engagement session is going to be!

Once we’ve determined what and where we’re going to shoot, we begin the process of styling you both so you fit your role. Since the camera freezes a moment in time, all the details in that image become amplified. Keep that in mind when you arrive to the shoot; pay attention to details, come polished, and ready to let go. I suggest for ladies, a mani/pedi, professional makeup and hair, the right accessories, and colors that flatter, ensure you look your most stunning in the photo. Men: arrive well-groomed, in clothes that are tailor fitted, or properly worn (i.e. shirts tucked in, or having a jacket that completes the look, no phones or wallets in your pockets). It is also preferable you put together a new outfit for the shoot! Don’t wear what you normally wear day-to-day. After-all, this isn't a day-to-day affair! I will help you with this! I am here every step of the way so you arrive at your shoot confident, but relaxed.

Imagine your big day has arrived. All that we’ve done prior to this day has not only prepared you for your shoot but now we are comfortable. We've built a rapport. You’ll find that you won’t feel as stressed as you think and you’ll actually be excited about doing it! The first half-an-hour will be the “acclimation” stage. This is where you get used to a camera pointing at you and you having to be natural about it. No worries! The comfort zone we’ve established and some gentle guidance will get you through this stage easily and one your way to creating some genuine and organic images of you and your fiancé!

FAQ

Q: How can I see your pricing?

A: Call me!! Or please fill out the form on my contact section with your phone number and a good time to reach you. You can also email me at jonathan@jspstudio.com Beside making sure the pricing fits your budget, its equally important to get a feel for the person who will be spending the day with you. I'm a likable guy! And I'm very happy to answer all your questions and give you a full idea of what our experience will be. If calling me, I will, as we speak, email you my pdf brochure with pricing and walk you through it. If emailing me, I will send you the brochure before we talk so you can evaluate.

Q: What is your photography style?

A: My style is considered an editorial documentary style. It incorporates elements of photojournalism and portraiture to define your wedding day.

Q: How do I reserve you for my date?

A: All dates are reserved once we receive your signed contract and deposit. Once that’s received, if possible, I like to take all my new clients to dinner to get better acquainted. Now that negotiations are over and our interests are aligned, I want to see you two as couple to get a real feel for what defines you. And here also, you get to see what a charming and fun guy I am!! If we can’t meet for dinner or drinks, then I’d want to schedule a Skype session. I have found this is the fundamental foundation for our interactions and will help define our experience together.

Q: Do you deliver every image you shoot?

A: The images we capture are a function of opportunity and event activity, which can vary from wedding to wedding. In addition, the selected images delivered to you are derived from a professional editing process that allows me to provide you with all images while eliminating the rejects; ie, duplicates, not in focus, missed exposures, etc. The rejects are not archived and therefore are not available for delivery. The editing process does not exclude pockets of time. My goal is to always create, and deliver, the portfolio that shows the greatest breadth of emotion available to me at each event.

Q: Does provide cinematography services?

A: No. I specialize photographic capture. I greatly enjoy the art of locking a moment in time.

Q: Have you shot at my venue before?

A: I’ve shot at many venues within the US and abroad. New locations are always scouted ahead of time according to the timeline of your day. There are times even locations I have shot often don’t allow me the comfort of familiarity and require adaptability. We always prepare our strategy based on the specifics of your day. As a skilled professional photographer, you are paying me exactly for that adaptability so as to keep your wedding day experience fun and the images unique.

Q: Do you do destination weddings? What additional fees are associated with destination weddings?

A: Yes! I have traveled extensively over the years and thoroughly enjoy each experience. As I am frequently between NYC and Florida, I have no travel charges for clients traveling between those two states. All else is my standard wedding rates along with airfare and hotel for my and my contracted staff.

Q: Do you provide partial day coverage?

A: I do have an 8-hour wedding day package.

Q: Does your studio do headshots, individual portraits, family portraits, maternity, commercial photography, or other types of photography?

A: Yes, for clients who request those services.

Q: Do you shoot Mitzvahs, or Corporate Events?

A: Yes. I have chosen to focus and excel at wedding and event photography

Q: Can I see a full event from start to finish?

A: Of course! Other than my blog (blog) or the wedding section on my website (weddings), I am more than happy to let you view a full proof set.

Q: Do you touch up all the images?

A: There are a few levels of this. First, the images you see on your proof site are adjusted for color, contrast, and exposure. They are clean printable images. Then when you choose the images for your album, we proceed with the artistic enhancements. This is when we use more sophisticated adjustments to enhance the inherent drama in each image.  Like what you see on my website.

Q: How long does it take to get the wedding proofs?

A: The full set of proofs will be ready on the proofing website within 6-8 weeks from your event. However, within the few days following your event, I will post a series of teasers for you and your guests to enjoy!

Q: How long does it take to get my album?

A: The album process is very streamlined. Once you receive your proof link, create an “album pics” folder in the favorites section on the proof site. Then go through your pictures and choose 80-100 images and save them to the “album pics” folder. Choose the ones you love! When you are done, use the proof site system to email me the folder. Upon receiving the folder, I will send out the high-resolution flash drive of images, then I will put your pictures in the album production queue.  An album design company will then create a first draft, and a link will be sent to you. This is an interactive site that allows you to request any changes directly online, and submit back to the company. They turnaround the first draft and any changes typically within a week of each submission. You can go as many rounds as you like. Once you’re satisfied with the layout, you give me your approval and pay the remaining balance. Then I prepare the album for printing by going over the images again for anything missed. Lastly, I deliver the files to the album company for print and binding. When completed, they will ship to you directly. The album company’s deliver their books anywhere between 6-8 weeks from submission.

Q: What album companies do you offer?

A: Based on years of trial and error, and experience, I use two album companies because of the different products they offer as well as the customer service they provide. The choices are offered in my pricing.

Q: Do you have liability insurance?

A: Most certainly!!
